| My purpose for applying to the department of Ocean
Engineering of Massachusetts Institute of Technology is to prepare me for a successful and
challenging career in the field of ocean engineering, and MIT OE is surely the best. My
homeland, Taiwan, is an island. Ocean engineering is crucial for us and has an unlimited
potential for development here. And the most important of all, it's really fascinating for
me. While attending the department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering of National Taiwan University, I majored in ocean engineering and chose underwater acoustics as my field of specialization. In order to prepare myself for advanced studies in ocean engineering, I planned my courses with foresight. I concentrated on courses in the following areas: acoustics, fluid mechanics/ocean engineering, advanced mathematics, numerical computing, and signal processing. Within these areas I received A's in 26 courses(75 credits). My over-all GPA is 3.8/4.0 and my GPA in the last two years is straight A's(4.0/4.0). Beside the outstanding academic records, I have applied my creativity and integrated my knowledge to some practical hands-on experiences. In the 3rd annual Model Ship Contest of NTU NAOE, I built a compass navigating model ship. In the contest the following year, I constructed an Incat Australia wavepiercer Stena Sea Lynx II model ship utilizing CAD software. I have also worked part-time as a research assistant in ultrasonic motors experiments. Recently my paper "Visualization of Beam Patterns for Sonar Arrays" was accepted by " International Symposium on Simulation, Visualization and Auralization for Acoustic Research and Education. April 1997,Tokyo. " That is the best instance of the integration of my studies. I am currently working as an RA in the Underwater Acoustics Lab. of NTU NAOE. My duty is the numerical computation of wave propagation problems. This job allows me to apply the theory I learned to research. I am also the TA of the course "Underwater Acoustics." My thorough knowledge of underwater acoustics as well as the ability to express my ideas clearly have made me a competent and popular TA. If given the chance, I wish to choose shallow-water acoustics as my topic of thesis to extend my current research. It is significant for us because of the ocean environment of Taiwan. I will further pursue studies in advanced mathematics, seismo-acoustics, wave propagation in elastic media, and seismic signal processing. I wish to support my thesis through both theory and experimentation. In my research I aspire to make a contribution in both academic and applied fields. With a solid and extensive background in ocean engineering along with my strong interests in the field, I am confident that I will be a capable student in your department, if accepted. Since MIT OE is undoubtedly the leading OE department in the world, I will not hesitate to state that you are my first choice in considering graduate studies. My supervisor Dr. Chi-fang Chen, an alumni of MIT OE, also strongly encourages me to attend your department. I am serious about attending your department, even if I receive no financial aid. I truly believe that MIT OE can provide me all I need to succeed in ocean engineering, and I would enjoy being a graduate student in your department. |
