        哥倫比亞大學成立於西元1756年，是美國第五個最老的大學，創校時叫做「國王學院」，當時只收男生，在1912年開始招收女生，才正式成為男女兼收的四年制大學，位於美國東岸紐約市的哈林區，是知名的常春藤聯盟成員，雖然校園面積是常春藤聯盟中排行最小的(約有36英畝)，但是校園環境優美而雅緻且和紐約市區緊緊相連著。簡稱為Columbia或是CU。

        目前哥倫比亞大學有16所學院﹙以法律、新聞學院知名度最高；美國不少重要新聞台主播出自此﹚，知名校友不計其數，包括三任的美國總統。該校圖書館為全美第六大，學校排名經常名列前茅，總學生人數約在25000人左右，國際學生人數占有約30%。

        哥倫比亞大學與藝術或設計相關的系所，最有名的首推建築學院，可說是美國東岸建築科系的權威，也是紐約建築界的地頭蛇。另一個知名的學院則是隸屬於藝術學院下的電影系。

        它的語言課程中心The American Language Program (ALP)成立於1911年，是全美歷史最悠久的英語第二外語課程之一，旨在推動學校的國際化，提供最細膩且完整的課程，給一般學生、商業和專業人士、以及所有來自世界各國。所有ALP的老師都是大學部的教授，並且都擁有英語教學、 應用語言學或相關領域的碩士或博士學位， ALP是一獨立自治的大學語言學校，並且在美國擁有為數眾多的全日語言課程，絕大部份的老師都可說多國語言，並且都曾出版英語學習相關教科書，並經常性的出席專業正式的教學研討會中演說。

        目前哥倫比亞大學共有來自14個不同國家6,300名的國際學生，國際學生數量在全美排名第4名。而這些學生中，中國、韓國、日本、加拿大和台灣佔的比例最高。文理學院〈School of Arts and Sciences〉是國際學生的大本營，每年有近1千名的國際學生獲准入學，佔了全部國際學生人數的3分之1。另外，國際關係、商學與工程科系也很受學生親睞，是國際學生選擇哥大的第二目標。

        就業率高也是哥倫比亞大學吸引人之處，據統計哥倫比亞大學畢業生，幾乎每4個人就有1個留在紐約地區工作，法學院的校友也是紐約法律界的天之驕子，新聞系的畢業生也大多是3大電視網的中堅份子。
